Building Project of the Year over £10m SECBE Award 2022 finalist

The Horizon Cruise Terminal at the Port of Southampton was named by a local resident following a competition that welcomed name suggestions from across the world. The name, Horizon, represents a bright new chapter for cruising which is an iconic part of the heritage of the city of Southampton and its future.

Southampton has a long-established global cruise reputation. In the last few years, ABP has invested £80m in its cruise infrastructure, with sustainability playing a key role. The new Horizon Terminal marks their commitment to the future of cruise, combined with the ports unrivalled sea, land and air access, cements its reputation as Europe’s leading cruise turnaround port.

The Horizon terminal is the most recent of 5 world class cruise terminals across the port which Stride Treglown have also helped to deliver over the years and accommodates security, customs, check-in, and baggage handling facilities. The terminal is a new world-class deep ocean cruise liner facility designed to accommodate larger cruise ships and to allow over 6,000 passengers to disembark and embark within a day. It features a huge, dramatic and iconic sweeping roof which makes a confident statement about the future of the cruise sector.

Horizon is thought to be the greenest in the UK and the building features off-site fabricated long span and undulating  glulam beams which produce the wave type appearance, together with more than 2000 roof mounted PV Panels. Shore Power connectivity has also been included as part of the scheme which enables vessels to plug into the local power supply rather than using on board generators. This significantly reduces carbon emissions and improves air quality. These qualities combine to lead the way in the next generation of world-class cruise terminals.

Stride Treglown have assisted with the delivery of all the cruise terminals within the Port of Southampton as follows:

  • Mayflower Cruise Terminal
  • Horizon Cruise Terminal
  • City Cruise Terminal
  • Ocean Cruise Terminal
  • QEII Cruise Terminal

Key achievements:

  • Horizon is a World Class, Flagship Cruise Terminal which creates an identity and makes a significant contribution to the surrounding area. The statement building really cements Southamptons reputation as a premier cruise destination throughout the world. Horizon signals a bright new chapter for cruise, which is an iconic part of the heritage in the city of Southampton and its future.

  • Horizon is the Greenest Cruise Terminal in the UK. The new facility embodies ABPs mission to ensure sustainability is core to the future of cruise and its ambition to generate as much of its own power as possible.

  • Completion on time and on budget during the covid pandemic. The technically challenging project involved a very close working relationship between client, contractor and design team to ensure that the building was completed for the arrival of the first cruise visitors in the summer of 2021.
