Zane Putne (Noviun Architects)

G4C Future Leader SECBE Award 2022 Finalist

Zane leads the Special Educational Needs (SEN) team within the practice, a sector which Noviun is a market leader within. Through her research work, building relationships with charities, the Department for Education and other specialists in SEN, she is continually developing her and the practice’s thinking to better understand the specialism and how designs can change the lives and opportunities for children.

Her belief is that knowledge is only a powerful tool if it is effectively shared, this stands true with her approach to her SEN research. She continually strives for better for the sector and actively shares her research through conference talks and webinars. She is also currently leading on a collaborative publication that will inform the future of SEN design within the practice.

Zane is a positive influence both within Noviun and also within the construction industry, she ensures that her voice and knowledge are part of influencing movements such as the Education Estates Advisory group as well as closely communicating regularly with the DfE.

Zane has a passion for mentoring, she can always be found helping younger members of staff and sharing knowledge where possible. At Noviun she is one of the founders of the ‘Monday Workshops’, which get the group together and share projects or other areas of interest in the industry. One of the key reasons to start these was to ensure that all in the practice had the opportunity to find their voice, Zane is influential in encouraging people to do this. Zane is also a very active member of the design panel within Noviun, regularly partaking and chairing design reviews of the projects running through the practice and sharing her knowledge and experience. Zane is also a RIBA Student Mentor, working closely with the University of Portsmouth to mentor and develop future generations of architects, she has also held this role with the University of Kent.

Alongside this, Zane is also an accomplished Architect. From her days at university, where she was nominated for the prestigious RIBA President’s Silver medal for design and Architecture PLB Sustainability Award, she has always shown her aptitude for developing excellent and well considered designs that deliver against even the most complex briefs. Her passion to deliver in every aspect of a project has led her to build very strong relationships with Education Trusts such as the Orchard Hill College Academy Trust, with the belief from the stakeholders that she has bought into their project personally.

Zane is seen as a key asset to Noviun, and the team look to her for guidance and leadership both in her projects and in the practice. She is always on hand to assist others with their projects and relieve pressure off other colleagues within practice either by sharing knowledge or directly lending a hand, often in her own time. She has a fantastic ability to read situations and understand if people are quietly struggling, she then works with them to get through their challenges in any way she can.

Key achievements:

  • Noviun’s SEND Lead and a sector influencer.

  • Always keen to share her knowledge for the betterment of the construction industry, including being part of Education Estates advisory group and working closely with the DfE whilst sharing knowledge in conferences/webinars.

  • Passionate about delivering the best results through a collaborative approach, clear communication and transparency.
